As an IBCLC and Registered Dietitian, I often get asked about sunflower lecithin for breastfeeding — especially for blocked ducts, thick milk, or mastitis prevention. While lecithin has been commonly recommended, I’ve shifted my approach based on both research and clinical experience. Here’s why — and what truly supports healthy milk flow and maternal comfort.
Why Sunflower Lecithin Isn’t Always the Answer
Sunflower lecithin is a phospholipid emulsifier found in many processed foods. It’s thought to help thin milk because it contains phosphatidylcholine, but in practice here’s what myself and many other lactation professionals started observing:
- Inflammation in moms: Processed seed oils like sunflower lecithin can contribute to subtle inflammation and affect fatty acid balance.
- Gut symptoms: Both mothers and babies may experience bloating, gas, or digestive discomfort.
- Inconsistent results for milk flow: While it may help some people, lecithin doesn’t address the root causes of blocked ducts, including poor milk removal, inflammation, or stress.
Because of this, I no longer recommend sunflower lecithin as a first-line strategy for lactation support + helps my clients identify ways to be proactive for plugged duct and mastitis prevention.
What Actually Supports Healthy Milk Flow
Instead of lecithin, I focus on nutrition and practices that reduce inflammation, support gut health, and optimize milk removal.
1. Choline + Probiotics
Choline is essential for cell health, liver function, and reducing inflammation, while probiotics help support maternal and infant gut health. One of my favorite options is BreastHealth — a probiotic with choline and prebiotics, formulated for pregnancy and breastfeeding.
2. Anti-Inflammatory Oils & Healthy Fats
Supporting lactation and reducing inflammation means choosing high-quality fats:
- Omega-3 fatty acids from salmon, sardines, or other fatty fish
- Nuts and seeds
- Olive oil and avocado oil
These fats help support hormone balance, reduce inflammation, and there is some research that shows you can influence the fatty acid profile of your milk when you consume more anti inflammatory fats in your diet.
3. Breast Gymnastics & Proper Milk Removal
Moving milk efficiently is key to preventing blocked ducts and mastitis:
- Gentle breast gymnastics can stimulate flow and prevent stasis — check out Maya Bolman’s breast gymnastics video {truly, this has been so helpful for so many clients!}
- Avoid tight bras or restrictive clothing, which can contribute to blockages and inflammation
- Ensure full milk removal at each feeding or pumping session — either by letting the baby nurse fully or supplementing with pumping if needed
Bottom Line: A Holistic, Evidence-Based Approach
Sunflower lecithin may help in some cases, but it can also cause inflammation, digestive issues, and inconsistent milk flow. Instead, focus on:
- Choline + probiotics (like BreastHealth)
- Anti-inflammatory fats and omegas
- Breast gymnastics and proper milk removal
- Avoiding tight or restrictive clothing
This combination supports maternal comfort, healthy milk flow, and infant wellness.
